On July 29th, reconnaissance elements of 1st Guards Tank Brigade and 44th Guards Tank Brigade reached the mighty Vistula River. The report came back that there were no German defenses on the western bank. They had won the race. The brigades were reinforced on July 30th as the mechanized corps began crossing. August began with the struggle for the bridgehead as the Germans began a series of furious attacks. Both the 1st and 24th Panzer Divisions were ordered in to crush the Soviet position; it was up to the 1st Guards Tank Brigade to drive them off.
